"I
love light, for me light is the desire for something new, it allowes
things to change.
All my
life I wanted to be good at something, as a child I had a thing with
music. In my dreams I played everything I had heard a friend of mine
play, she was having piano-lessons. Beautiful music is comforting. I
used to listen to the radio a lot, my mother would then put on some
classical music. Mozart for example, everything he created is so
beautiful. Such a creative genius that died so young, just like my
inspiration in painting and drawing; Egon Schiele. And Chopin,
sounds of love, everlasting through time.
I love
living. It is unacceptable that this life will ever end. If I had
the choice I'd only concern myself with things that are beyond life.
Beauty is central in that thought. What is beauty? A complete
absence of uglyness, everything in perfect harmony.
When I
was a child my father often took me to a museum. There was a
painting there of a dead child. The little face was porcelain,
transparant almost. This picture made a big impression, especially
the lonelyness in the painting, I can still draw it by heart today.
Everything is about lonelyness. However I do not consider it to be a
totaly negative emotion, it has a certain beauty to it. Painting is
a way to cherisch that lonelyness, at the same time it creates an
emotional connection to what I am painting.
My art
teacher during highschool was very stimulating for my artistical
development. Through him, I got into contact with wonderful people.
I stepped into another world, one of art and freedom. I spend entire
summers in that world. For the first time I was somewhere where I
actually wanted to be, if it would have been up to me I would have
stayed there for ever. In my memories those summers are filled with
beautiful weather.
I draw
a lot, when I do, I always draw children. Children have always
fascinated me, especially "being a child". Children live in a
different world from us grown-ups. The world of children and that of
adults are paralel. Children move me in the way they don't seem to
know any boundaries. I think children are lonely a lot, just because
those who are grown up no longer remember what it was like.
Luckily, the past is gone, life is good and the present fascinates
me. Egon Schiele is my soulmate, Matthijs Roling is a skilled
painter and art by Co Westerik is admirable. For myself I finaly
have the feeling I can realy do something and that I can show others
excactly what I want them to see. This means that everything is
coming together now, both in image as in technical experience. A
painting belongs to the past as soon as it is finished. At that
point it may leave my studio. The emotional bond I feel with it,
only exists in the process of creation, from idea until realisation.
Painting is my life. And I do it with all my senses and my hands,
that turn tempera, bee-wax, wood and canvas into an image, an
emotional experience. Oilpaint is inspirational, especially the sent
it gives my studio. Tempera to me is a link to the great masters of
the past. Wax improves transparancy and texture, it allows you to
keep working in thin separate layers. Wooden door- and closetpannels
provide me with a pleasant surface to work on, especially when they
are old, the texture of the wood creates a synthesis with my art.
For larger paintings I use canvas.
To be
known is pleasing for a person, however modesty is always the
dearest virtue, to be pleased with your own appreciation. In 1972 I
sold my first piece of art trough a gallery. At that time I was in
the fourth year of the Academy of Arts. Now, almost 30 years later,
everything I create has an immediate destiny. The sweet way in which
time makes everything relative."

Elias werd geboren in 1952 in Leeuwarden.
Van 1974 tot 1979 volgde hij een opleiding aan de Academie Minerva
in Groningen. Sinds 1985 woont hij in Franeker.
Hij
benadert de schilderkunst vooral vanuit de liefde voor het metier.
Hij houdt van de eigenschappen van de verschillende verfsoorten en
kleuren. Deze fascinatie is bepalend voor zijn werkwijze. Hij is een
echte schilder; hij werkt met verf, hij goochelt niet, frunnikt
niet, maar werkt breeduit om de verwijzing naar de zichtbare
werkelijkheid er met vaart op te krijgen. Hij zet het fond wel eens
aan, gebruikt contrasterende onderschilderingen, waardoor vreemde
sferen opgewekt worden om een verhevigde dieptewerking te verkrijgen
en zorgt voor allerlei andere effecten. De illusie van, de
associatie met de werkelijkheid lijdt niet onder die effecten, maar
wordt erdoor versterkt. Zelfs de eigenzinnige detaillering, waardoor
het kenmerkende Douwe Elias-beeld bereikt wordt, doet niets af aan
dit illusionistische gehalte. De eigengereidheid van detaillering is
vooral het gevolg van de variatie in de textuur, een variatie die nu
eens ondersteund dan weer tegengegaan wordt door opvallende
kleuraccenten.
De
mensen in het werk van Douwe Elias worden duidelijk getypeerd,
hoewel elk gezicht toch een mysterie blijft. Iedere lijn heeft een
functie, en lichtval en schaduw bepalen de compositie. De laatste
jaren vormen o.a. zwakbegaafde kinderen een onderwerp voor de
schilderijen. Zijn ouders waren verbonden aan het buitengewoon
onderwijs. De oude zwart/witfoto’s blijken een bron van inspiratie.
Andere
onderwerpen zijn: landschappen, stadsgezichten, (café-)interieurs en
het uitzicht vanuit zijn atelier.
Zijn
manier van schilderen lijkt snel, spontaan en soms zelfs
overrompelend . Door een geraffineerd spel met het licht en het
onderwerp ontstaat er een zekere dramatiek. Douwe Elias heeft een
zeer herkenbare eigen stijl ontwikkeld en wordt niet beïnvloed
door modieuze stromingen. Hij baseert zicht op de goede oude
schilderkunst, op de traditie die hij niet moedwillig wil
vernieuwen, maar waar hij wel een persoonlijke stempel op wil
drukken.
